Autumn, 1900
Winifred had sat at her desk all evening after dismissing herself early from dinner. Perhaps, for anyone else, this would have been queer behavior, but for a writer such as herself, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Her family was used to her abruptly dashing away from them to jot down an idea, typically followed by locking herself in her study for hours on end. But on this evening, each stroke of her quill had proven to be utterly useless, and somewhere deep down inside she knew it was because she wished she didn’t have to be writing these words. But did she have any other option? Her co-workers were accepting of her frequent tardiness and forgetfulness, and even her more outlandish ideas for the next headline, but they certainly wouldn’t want some pregnant spinster working for them; least of all JJ.  For months, she had prayed she would miraculously get her monthlies, that she had been wrong about the little one growing inside her. But, as each day passed, and she was yet bleed, it became clear she was with child again. As she sat there with her head in her hands, tears spilled over onto the page she had written explaining her 𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 from The Daily. If only there were another way...
next / previous / first
transcript below the cut
<quill scraping>
Lawrence: There you are. I thought I might find you here <tik-tok, tik-tok> Winifred: Oh my, I hadn't notice the time
Lawrence: Should I not expect you to come to bed soon, then? Winifred: <sighing> I don't think so Lawrence: They work you to hard there, Winifred Don't they know I miss my wife?
Winifred: Wait...Lawrence Stop, stop I can't do this right now
Winifred: I'm sorry, I'm still not feeling well is all Lawrence: <nods> I understand Should we send for a doctor? It's been awhile now... Winifred: <shakes head> No, no. I'll be fine. Just a bit of nausea, that's all. And I truly do have work to do Lawrence: Do let me know if it gets worse. And if you're not feeling better in a few weeks, I think you should reconsider
NARRATION Lawrence places a gentle kiss on top of Winifred's head before departing. She waits to break down until she hears their bedroom door shut.
Winifred: Oh, god... What am I going to do?

The funeral service for Grover was hard for Eva to go through. She tried to remain strong for her husband and children, and as her position as the eldest of his children. It took so much out of her by the end of the day, and once he was buried in the ground, she wanted nothing more than to lay there beside him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reality of it all hit her the hardest upon setting her eyes on his headstone. Eva was now an orphan with no more parents in this world to guide her along. How was she expected to continue on without them? Her loneliness almost consumed her there in that cemetery before she turned her head and her eyes landed on her brother. Her dear brother, dressed in black, who did not look sad in the slightest.

some shots from the past week
Anaya and Joel are settling into their new routine with the baby as they prepare for the wedding, though they’ve been discussing looking into moving into a bigger place.
After visiting her brother’s place to ask him to be the officiant at her wedding, she found out she had two nieces?? Apparently the result of a one night stand when her brother was in college, Anaya didn’t care and immediately welcomed them into her family, though his BM seems to be a little stuck up..
Gizmo, Anaya’s first pet and best friend recently passed away and it’s been affecting her work performance :(
Anaya has been taking advantage of her free time on the weekends to focus on her wellness and get back into a better mental space

The Hero with Dead Parents is not Cliché, it’s Necessary
The staggering number of protagonists in sci-fi and fantasy with dead parents grows every single year. Frodo Baggins, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker (before the retcon in ESB), almost every Disney Prince and Princess, the Baudelaire children. Beyond the realm of fantasy into action, thriller, romance, mystery, slice-of-life, and bildungsromans.
Dead parents, or parent, is the curse of being the hero of the story and for a very good reason:
Parents are inconvenient as f*ck.
Unless the mom and/or dad is the villain of the story or the entire story is about the relationship with the parent/parents, the “dead parent” trope serves many purposes and while it may be “cliché” that doesn’t mean this trope is bad or, in my opinion, overused.
It’s one less liability the hero has to worry about protecting
It’s one less obstacle in the hero’s path to their adventure
It’s one (or two) less characters to find excuses to stay relevant in the story
It’s a juicy backstory a lot of people can relate to
Trauma. Is. Compelling.
It’s an excellent motivation
And their murder is an excellent inciting incident
Living parents and guardians get killed off both for internal plot reasons, and meta writing reasons: Living parents are a pain in the ass to keep up with. You’re stuck with a character your hero should still keep caring about, keep thinking about, keep acting in relation to how their actions will be seen and judged by that parent. That parent becomes an obvious liability by any villain who notices or cares.
Living parents can of course be done well, unless they’re the villain, but they just kind of sit there on the fringes of the plot, waiting around to be relevant again and they kind of come in four flavors:
There when the plot demands for pie and forehead kisses (Sally from Percy Jackson)
A suffocating but well-meaning obstacle in between the character and their independence trying to do right (Abby from The 100, Katniss’ mom from Hunger Games, Spirit from Soul Eater)
A mentor figure (Valka from HTTYD 2, Hakoda from ATLA)
The only rock this character has left (Ping from Kung Fu Panda)
*Notice how many of my examples lost their partners shortly before or during the plot, thus still giving the hero the “dead parent” label.
Most of these are self-explanatory so I’ll say this:  I think this trope gets exhausting when the parents are written out without enough emotional impact on the hero. These are their parents and a lot of the time, the emotional toll of losing them isn’t there, like just slapping a “dead parents” sticker is all you need to justify a character’s tragic backstory and any behavioral issues they might have.
Like, yes, the hero has dead parents, but you still have to tell me what that means to them beyond obligate angst and sadness. When the “dead parents” trope reads as very by-the-numbers, usually the rest of the story is, too.
How present the parents were in the character’s life should be proportional to the death’s impact on the narrative (as with any character you kill off). If they were virtually nonexistent? No need to waste a ton of time. If they didn’t matter to the character before, they don’t need to matter now unless the plot revolves around some knowledge or secret their parent never shared.
Sometimes, the hero’s dead parents are a non issue. Frodo being raised by Bilbo doesn’t impact his character at all. It’s a detail given and tossed away. On the other hand, sometimes the entire centerpiece of the work is revenge/justice/catharsis surrounding the parent’s death—Edward and Alphonse Elric’s entire story is defined by the consequences of trying to bring their mother back from the dead.
As someone who kept one of my protagonist’s parents alive and didn’t make them villains just to spite the trope, I have all the more respect for this enduring legacy of fiction. You can of course keep the parents alive, but I don't think it's seen as lazy or cheating or taking a shortcut just killing them off, so long as you remember that your hero is human and should react to losing them like a real person.

What happened to the statue of The Bombinating Beast? - Part 1: ATWQ to ASOUE
This theory is dedicated to @ven10, whose post depicting the statue in the episode of The End (https://www.tumblr.com/unfortunatetheorist/758594891663212544/it-certainly-is-ven10-it-certainly-is?source=share), inspired my thoughts. There are also inferences made by @snicketsleuth (and @snicketstrange) which are used.
So, by the end of WITNDFAON (which I admit I haven't read yet but will get round to), we know that The Bombinating Beast statue is of great importance, as well as:
"Snicket fed Armstrong to the creature, and then wandered into the Clusterous Forest with the statue. It is unknown what he did with the statue and what happened to that beast, or its siblings, after this" ~ Snicket Wiki.
The only hint we have of The Bombinating Beast is that Lemony wanders into the Clusterous Forest with it's statue. Therefore it is important to take into consideration an extra detail about the Clusterous Forest, which links the ATWQ universe to ASOUE:
Lucky Smells Lumbermill gets its green timber from The Clusterous Forest.
This is my line of reasoning as to what happened:
1. Despite being an agent of VFD, Lemony is still a child, so there is a chance he feels some remorse for killing Armstrong Feint/Hangfire.
2. It is out of said remorse that Lemony decides to have nothing to do with the Beast again, burying the statue of the Beast deep in the forest... or so he thinks.
3. During ASOUE (just before TMM) a worker (e.g. Evander) chopping trees for Lucky Smells Lumbermill comes across the statue.
4. Not knowing what to do with it, and being under hypnotic influence, the worker promptly hands it to the foreman, who gives it to Sir.
5. It is extremely likely that Sir (The Miserable Mill) and Wiley Smogface (FU:13SI, ATWQ) are in fact the same person; however, there is no reference of any connection whatsoever between Sir/Smogface and The Bombinating Beast's statue. This implies that he knows nothing about the Beast, which makes little sense given that he is from Stain'd-by-the-Sea.
This logical gap can be filled: if Sir/Smogface had a "very terrible childhood" as Charles has clearly stated during TMM, this could refer to his parents bouncing around from town to town as they seek different jobs with more and more money. Hence, Wiley is left by himself in his parents' latest job-stop - Stain'd-by-the-Sea - unaware of the legend of The Bombinating Beast.
6. Sir has no idea of the power he holds... but apparently, neither does Georgina! There's also no reference to Georgina knowing anything about the statue - she's just a VFD optometrist with a bad reputation who lives in Paltryville, even during the events of ATWQ.
This implies that the statue... well... just stood there, as an ornament, in Sir's office.
7. Someone took the statue from Sir's office at Lucky Smells Lumbermill. But who? Well, whoever it was must have known two things:
a) The importance of the statue
b) It's location
There are only 3 people who seem to fit the bill perfectly - Lemony, Ellington and Moxie.
We know that each of them have their reasons:
Lemony: To use its power to somehow help the Baudelaires.
Ellington: To end it all after falling into a depression from the loss of her father OR to claim revenge on Lemony after having gone through the grief mentioned above.
Moxie: For a great story and the Mallahan legacy; after all, Lady Mallahan allegedly slew the Original Bombinating Beast.
@snicketsleuth's post, 'What is The Great Unknown?' (Full post here: The Snicket Sleuth — What is “The Great Unknown”? (tumblr.com)), says the following:
"Following the events of “All The Wrong Questions”, Ellington eventually escaped from the prison cell with Kit Snicket thanks to the skeleton key in Ellington’s bag. Kit and Ellington, before going their own ways, exchanged a good deal of information. Kit Snicket could not help noticing Ellington acted extremely angry towards Lemony and VFD in general.
In the following years, Ellington worked tirelessly to recover her father’s remaining assets as well as uncovering the secrets of Inhumane Society. Though the book Caviar: Salty Jewel of the Tasty Sea was destroyed, she had had the opportunity to read some chapters Lemony hadn’t. No one knew about the CBB more than her. With some effort, she managed to find the animal hiding in the Clusterous Forest, as well as the Bombinating Beast statue that Lemony had buried there. With the statue, she was now in control of the CBB. Eventually she managed to track down an octopus-shaped submarine which used to belong to Hangfire, only to lose it to Count Olaf.
As Olaf escaped with the submarine (now rebaptized the Carmelita), Ellington pursued him. She used the statue to control the CBB, ordering it to seize the Carmelita. The CBB first encountered the Queequeg in close vicinity to the Queequeg. Unsure whether these two crafts were allied with each other, Ellington ordered the CBB to stand down. Captain Widdershins mistook the question-mark shape on their radar for an enemy submarine.  Later, Ellington witnessed the Queequeg being attacked by the Carmelita, and decided to approach the CBB to scare Count Olaf and help the crew of the Queequeg. Count Olaf also assumed the mysterious entity was an enemy submarine."
I agree with Ellington being the one who takes the statue...
...but I don't think she found it in the Clusterous Forest. Sorry, @snicketsleuth.
8. If Georgina's reputation was really as bad as Moxie made it out to be, there is a chance that Ellington would have visited the Lumbermill in disbelief - I think it is here that she stumbles upon the statue.
9. This happens:
"With the statue, she was now in control of the CBB.
Count Olaf also assumed the mysterious entity was an enemy submarine.
The Queequeg eventually escaped from the clutches of the Carmelita. While making their way to the Hotel Denouement, Olaf, Esme and Carmelita Spats realized the Baudelaire orphans’ absence and were betrayed by Fernald and Fiona who let the imprisoned youngsters start a mutiny. Ellington followed the entire mutiny from afar. The youngsters were released. Esme, Olaf and Carmelita fled. The octopus-shaped submarine was eventually given back to Ellington Feint who promised to help Fernald and Fiona if they were ever in trouble."
10. Ellington had no further use for the CBB (as she already gained her father's submarine, which was the intention) so she [presumably, most likely] discarded the statue in the sea, before it washed up on the island, as @ven10 describes.

The poetry that inspired Jeff Buckley
Aimee Ferrier
Sun 1 October 2023 21:15, UK
Voices as incredible as the one belonging to Jeff Buckley don’t come around too often. Unfortunately, after releasing one record, Grace, Buckley, with all his potential, was taken away too soon. At the age of 30, the singer went for a swim from which he never returned, drowning in the Mississippi River.
Yet, his legacy lives on as one of the most influential artists to emerge from the 1990s, and his music is widely celebrated today for its emotional and lyrical complexity. Not only did Buckley possess an otherworldly voice, but he was also an extremely gifted guitar player and writer, with all his talents combining to create a masterful body of work.
Even when Buckley was covering other artists’ songs, such as ‘Lilac Wine’, ‘The Other Woman’ and ‘Hallelujah’, he imbued the pieces with his own distinctive style. Yet, his penchant for covers wasn’t a reflection of an aversion to writing. Buckley knew how to pen a stunningly poetic track, with songs like ‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ and ‘Morning Theft’ suggesting that even if Buckley didn’t have the vocal pipes he was gifted with, he’d get by just fine as a writer.
Buckley took inspiration from many different writers and musicians when writing his own songs. Musically, Buckley looked back to folk artists like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and, of course, his own father, Tim Buckley, from whom he was estranged. Elsewhere, he loved the work of Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the rich tones of Nina Simone, and Led Zeppelin, calling Robert Plant “my man”.
However, when it came to his literary inspirations, Buckley had an extensive book collection, which he no doubt looked to for ideas when writing his lyrics. He owned a lot of poetry, with Rainer Maria Rilke proving to be a particular favourite. Not only did Buckley own Dunio Elegies, Rilke on Love and Other Difficulties: Translations and Considerations Poems from the Book of Hours, but he also owned his epistolary collection Letters to a Young Poet.
Buckley was also a fan of the classic American poet Walt Whitman, owning Leaves of Grass and From the Soil. Of course, no poetry collection is complete without copies of Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell and Illuminations, alongside some Charles Baudelaire – Buckley-owned Paris Spleen. The singer also owned the Selected Poems of confessional poet Anne Sexton and modernist writer T.S Eliot.
Check out Buckley’s complete poetry collection below.

Alright so part two of my explaining BSD french authors:
Arthur Rimbaud !
Tumblr media
This is the boy. Looks young, right ? That's cause he's seventeen in this. (Funnily enough, he's exactly the same age as Verlaine's wife. Verlaine, though, is 27 at the time they meet. Yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said he was a piece of shit.)
Rimbaud is kind of THE poet of teenage rebellion. He was born in 1854, under Napoleon III to place him back in his historical context. He wrote quite a bit in opposition to Napoleon, actually.
His father is absent at first, and then not here at all later. He has... A complex and complicated relationship with his mother. He gave her a disrespectful nickname, she was seen hitting him several times (although at the time that's hardly surprising...), but at the same time when he asked her to go see him in London (at a time where the trip was very expensive, and she'd never left France in her life before that) she came, and his sister described him then as "the happiest I'd ever seen him". She's often seen as the source of his inner anger and rebellion.
What he hates for sure, though, was living in his house, with his family, and especially in his hometown, Charleville, which he despises.
He's especially known for having fled his house a lot, as in several times a year, for several days every time, walking during the day and sleeping on the road during the night. His most famous poem, "Ma bohème" (unstranslatable title because "bohème" is a french concept, but it basically means living your life day after day, in communion with nature and/or your dreams, often with an artistic dimension and no money whatsoever - also has travel connotations because it derives from "bohemian"), actually talks solely about that.
He wrote from his fifteenth to his nineteenth birthday, and was - still is - seen as a genius, being one of the most influential french poets ever despite having written for only four years. He was famous for being uncontrollable, and it translates back to his style : he took extremely traditional forms and changed their rules. (Which weirdly enough actually kinda fits with Rimbaud's ability ??)
If we ever have a Baudelaire in BSD, know that his character will probably look up to him, seeing as Rimbaud is usually seen as continuing Baudelaire's legacy of completely revolutionising french poetry. His two most famous books are "A Season in Hell" and "Illuminations", his last one. His literary movement is symbolism, invented by Baudelaire, characterized by melancholy and an attraction to the ethereal and mysterious. Rimbaud himself thinks that "the poet must search and describe the unknown" and, well, too bad if he sacrifices his sanity. He's also one of the first after Baudelaire to write prose poems.
He stopped writing, forever, at twenty, after the Verlaine fiasco. Actually, he wrote "Illuminations" directly after, then gave it to Verlaine so that he could get it published instead of doing it himself.
That's where his life gets really weird. He tries to learn seven different skills and languages while traveling everywhere, fails, his sister dies and he shaves his head for her funeral, is forced into the military to fight in Java, then deserts, gets hired on a boat on his way back and becomes a sailor, then tries to get hired in the American Navy, doesn't get any answer, goes in a circus then a factory, and all of that while traveling everywhere in the world in the space of about three years.
Nobody knows where he was for the nine months after that - and during all of this, everyone who knows him is hoping that he gets back to writing poetry - and then he goes home to help his brother with his farm before leaving, AGAIN. He walks from France to Italy, then gets in a boat to Alexandria, where he works in a construction project to manage the workers. This keeps going for about eleven more years, so I can't list everything this guy did : we'd need a whole ass novel.
He stays in Northern Africa for almost the rest of his life, although he travels quite a lot in that region and never stops moving. In France, he's still as famous as he was at 17, and several eulogies are written for him without his knowledge. We can also note that he does weapon trafficking, for a very short period, at some point. He writes to his family that he's "bored", of all things. He's described by the people he meets then as "smart, sarcastic, not very talkative, never talking about his past".
He then dies in Marseille, in his thirties, from cancer in his leg.
I'm gonna be honest : I don't like his BSD characterization. Rimbaud's a wild card, a chaotic teenager, as an author. I also ! Hate ! That he's Verlaine's mentor. But that'll be the next part, where I'll talk of IRL Rimbaud and Verlaine.
Previous and future parts are in the #IrlBSDFr tag.

hopefully you don’t still have a sinus headache!
recently, i’ve been thinking about baby bea getting to go to normal school and making non-vfd friends her own age, and violet, klaus and sunny having messy complicated feelings and fears about this but mostly being very happy for her.
yes!! thankfully i am now sinus headache FREEEEE
and!!!! AAAAAAAA YES..........
i think sunny and babybea both get to go to normal school and they have like, similar but, different struggles re: interacting with people at school. sunny purposely distances herself from her classmates for a long time bc she's Going Through It when she and her siblings come back from the island and before they find babybea, like there's a lot of mystery around this girl who just showed up and she heavily encourages the mystery bc she doesn't have the patience to deal with anybody while she's trying to fit back into the world, her life, trying to find her sister, trying to figure out what she remembers of the past and what she doesn't. (i am team 'sunny remembers the events of canon physically more than she actually truly remember-remembers them, but remembers the island the best.' do we have metaphorical teams for how much sunny remembers of canon?) i think she.......feels like she has to contend with the legacy of not only lemony's books but geraldine's punctilio articles, more than violet and klaus. ANYWAY. all this to say, in the nature of children, certain kids have a real laser focus on kids they think are Weird Or Different and sunny fits both of those things and she's definitely 1) been in a few fights bc she reacts physically 2) grabbed a kid's arm and bit him. it was not a pleasant parent-teacher conference for violet. by high school she's probably a little better. they have babybea back and have created the extended baudelaire family unit and i think she feels a little more secure in the world. as secure as a fourteen year old can feel...........................she gets encouraged to take the culinary elective in high school.
sunny, with deep-seated certainty, while using a ruler and an enormous knife to cut petit fours in the kitchen: can't teach me anything i don't know.
but she takes it anyway. she enjoys it greatly and does, in fact, learn new things. she makes some friends.
ANYWAY. YES. BABYBEA. she's spent so much time alone, and she's good at it. she enjoys it. but she really wants friends she just doesn't quite know how to do it. she's very close to her family, and she loves them more than anyone else, but she'd like to be close to other people her own age too, it's just not something that comes very naturally to her. but she LOVES school and she really likes being around people. her interests are just. not. necessarily. aligned. with her classmates. babybea herself has been in a vfd school, after all, along with all the Lemony Snicket Was Briefly Her Guardian While Helping Her Find Her Family And I Am Sure That Was A Real Time shenanigans. she does find it easier to talk to the adults (plus sunny) in her life and it's hard for her. clearly they encourage it bc As Adults they are aware, theoretically, It Is Good For A Child To Have A Super Normal Upbringing That DOESN'T Involve, Say, Scaling A Mountain For Reasons (even though literally every single one of them has scaled a fucking mountain. babybea included.), but yeah, there ARE complicated messy feelings!!!! violet and klaus didn't really get to finish their education the way they should've. lemony and the sbg were entrenched in vfd. sunny is, see previous paragraphs. i guess it's a lot of heightened parenting emotions. is your child safe at school vs is the small child you have guardianship over safe at school and TOTALLY not going to be, say, kidnapped by the ankle one random day. are the people your children knows people they're going to be safe with? normal parenting fears vs a vfd fear. sigh. and it's not like violet and klaus easily get along with the parents of babybea's classmates bc they aren't her parents. they're siblings and they're babybea's Family. there's things they can talk about but there's still a real disconnect, you know?
meanwhile babybea is just going 'have you seen [black and white movie of your choice]??' and her classmates are going '............no??' sigh, again.
but i think she wants to join band!!!!!!! oh.....babybea as a little band kid.................so i think she learns the accordion from lemony, and either the school system she's in is That Weird (as some are) that they need an accordion or, she plays the clarinet. god she's probably drum major in high school i'm sobbing. that's precious. also babybea is like permanently 10-13ish in my head bc otherwise i get upset about the passage of time bc she's BABY goddammit so it hurts to think about her as any older than that but let's think of her as drum major in the far, far distant future.
anyway anyway band is great for her!! a lot of the other kids in her year look up to her bc she develops a wide music (and music theory) knowledge and they go to her for help a lot and she's so thrilled and so pleased and that's how she really starts interacting with other kids. eventually they talk about more than just music, but one must start somewhere. the first time she goes over a friend's house is Harrowing for the adults, but they survive. but babybea's friends LOVE going to her house bc the baudelaire household feels very comforting and homey. nothing beats a friend's homey house and violet and klaus' spirited (if minorly overbearing bc they love babybea) hospitality. they also think sunny is super cool. (everybody has a crush on sunny. she almost gets concerned about it, but she is the coolest.)
babybea's friends: your sister is THE COOLEST babybea: she's not my sister, she's my family? babybea's friends: so, like, your sister babybea: no! just. family. babybea's friends: then who's that guy lemony: ? babybea: that's my uncle. babybea's friends: so why is sunny not your sister? babybea: because!
oh! so babybea starts a book club. her friends suggest it bc the baudelaire family library is so big and has so many books and so many fun places to read, that she and her friends have a lot of fun hanging out and reading books. lemony takes the news with deep horror and trepidation. but it all works out okay. the worst the book club gets is like, a bunch of kids arguing about who gets to be which character in each book they get obsessed with. which can be vicious enough, you know. sometimes babybea gets them to sit down and watch an old movie. occasionally, in the spirit of all good book clubs, they get pizza.

It was shortly after the O'Doyle girl's funeral that Lawrence's sleep disturbances began. They had started small with troubles falling asleep at night and the bruised-coloured circles under his eyes became darker, showing off his insomnia to the world like a flashy new coat.
He never questioned it when eventually his sleepless nights ceased; he never thought it'd been replaced by something more peculiar like sleepwalking. After all, he wasn't privy to such phenomena.
Tumblr media
Without fail, he'd rise from his bed and make his way across the house silently. Careful, even in his unconscious mind, not to step on the creaky floorboards and disturb anyone's slumber.
Always he went to the steps - the true mystery being how he never stumbled - climbing towards the attic. Up, up, UP he went, one foot in front of another until he eventually reached the top; almost as though he were a moth drawn to a flame, only instead of being attracted to orange glowing embers, the flame was a bright red door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each morning he found himself lying just outside the door with no recollection of how he'd gotten there, or even remembering that they'd had an attic at all. Never did he question what was on the other side, too afraid to pull the handle and see.
Instead, he'd stand just outside, shivering there wearing only his nightgown, a ringing in his head as he'd whisper "Oh dear, I've gone positively mad!"

To try and get back into better spirits, Evaline hosted a soiree in the springtime well after the snow had melted. In doing so, Evaline craved to return back to the version of herself before her father's death. The one even before children who partied and carried on in life without any worries. It felt impossible, however Eva was once that girl before. Surely she could return to her.
Getting all dressed up and painted, Evaline went on to ready her children as well. She would allow them just two hours to join in on the festivities with their guests. And the boys were very excited to be apart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those first few hours Eva easily lost herself in the music and laughter. The swell of people allowed her to sway in and out of her mind. She focused her time on her boys and the fun of having them there with her.

her. In spite of that, when it was time for them to retire for the night, Eva suddenly found herself empty again. The party continued on but she could not find it within herself to do so as well.

After just one more glass, Eva kissed her husband goodnight and returned to her bedroom, where she cried herself deep into the darkness.

Other Relationships:
Céleste, or those who know her better, Cece, was thrust into a world brimming with legacy from the very start. She was born at precisely 5:45am, the time she often time’s swears that only extremely successful people get up at. Cece is the first and only child of Felicien Baudelaire, a world renowned art curator and [redacted] Zephir-Beaudelair, a local celebrity jazz singer with deep deep roots in the world of New Orleans witchcraft. [Redacted] was a high priestess, as was her mother in a local coven that was known in reaches even far beyond Louisana; but only ever really noticed or spoken about by other witches. Her father however is not magical, but he did show her other types of enchantment’s and divination. Through the world of art. Felix made sure that she was well traveled; whisking her away to Paris, France or Tbilisi, Georgia. Anywhere that she could experience culture and language.
Despite all of this, she still always preferred her home in New Orleans. In the French Quarter. It was more than just a neighborhood to Céleste. To her, it was a sentient entity. One filled up with music, whimsy and secrets. When she was small she used to wander the cobblestone streets. The fragrant scent of magnolia blossoms mixing with the soulful notes of rich saxophone tumbling from various cafes and bars. It was a sanctuary for artists, it was no wonder why Cece would end up falling in love with Cardinal Hill too. Artist’s like her mother filling the sacred space. Her club performances were iconic in New Orleans. They drew in not only tourists, but also many locals. Everyone was eager to hear her voice that was powerful in more ways than one. The clubs at which she crooned were an eclectic mix. Places where the veil was thin; inhabited by spiritualists and high society patrons alike. It was especially thin during the night. When the French Quarter and Bourbon street would thrum with the humming energy of the iconic coven. From which she was initiated into at a young age. It was extremely secretive and had held influence for a very long time deep in the city’s roots. Céleste’s role within this coven became as natural to her as breathing.
From the youngest age possible, she was completely immersed in New Orleans. The smooth sound of jazz, the succulent riffs of R&B, and the whispering chants of her coven. Her mother’s late night performances were a staple of Céleste’s childhood, and some of her fondest memories. It was during these fleeting but lasting moment’s in smokey lounges that she felt the rumblings of her own musical prowess. She often scribbled down lyrics in shaky penmanship as she tried to mimic the sounds of her mother’s vocal runs. Over the years, she discovered her own voice. One of passion. A style that was definitely her own, shaped by her mother’s legacy and her own spirit. She was deeply intertwined in these two worlds. The glamor of her father’s life and upbringing mingling with the mystery of her mother’s.
And while she was used to watching her mother cast spells and converse with spirits in hushed voices, sat cross-legged and curious. Cece was more drawn to a more grounded form of spirituality. Something more tangible and in tune with her own body. Kundalini Yoga, turned out to be one of these anchors to keep her on the ground. At 12 years old she would join in on her mother’s early bird sun salutations. It started off as a way to bond with her mother but it turned into a personal practice. She found that the way her body flowed was a simple and satisfying way to not only regulate her emotions but also as a way to transmute her energy. While most other kids her age were focused on more ‘regular’ activities, she was always a bit misanthropic than the rest. She was quiet and introspective to most, finding solace in the silence. Or in a book.
Through this, she was able to harness a very fine awareness of her body’s central energy points. She studied extensively on how each pose would unlock and subsequently release stored emotions and traumas. Cece became especially in tune with her heart chakra. The energetic epicenter of compassion and love. This would eventually become essential to her magical practices as an adult. Allowing her to heal herself and others through reiki, yoga and even her music. It could also sometimes be her downfall. A blessing and a curse all the same. In many ways, yoga became her own personal spellbook; allowing her to flow with the universe.
Following her graduation and official induction into the world famous coven, tragedy struck and she clung onto Kundalini as a lifeline. Her mother, her guiding star, passed away in a car accident. A gruesome head on collision. Cece was left to navigate the world without the woman who had meant everything to her. Her mother, her mentor. It was a devastating loss, and she found herself thrust into the role as the family’s anchor. With her father off in Paris, she had to keep the family’s French Quarter estate afloat. The owner’s of these jazz clubs of New Orleans, many of them like big brother’s to her, begged her to fill the absence her mother’s voice left. So, she tried her best to fill her shoes. In an act of prophecy that felt like it was straight out of a modern universe Frank Herbert novel. Cece found this more comforting than sorrowful; almost cathartic. The burden was heavy, so thick you could cut it with a santoku. But it also pushed her to find strength in the music. An outlet for pain so great there could be no words. Despite her growing pains, her talents started to attract attention. Her own music, which was once a private practice, became a refuge and a local hit. People started asking for CD’s of her own music and eventually she caught the attention of a local radio DJ who was compelled to play her music on air.
Her career began to take off, but her world was further shaken when a nefarious secret about her personal life threatened every little thing she had worked so tirelessly to achieve. The intense pressure and public scrutiny would only continue until the only outcome could be a burst. An explosion in slow motion right in front of her. With her father not there to take care of it for her Cece made the hard decision to leave New Orleans behind. She found a quiet refuge in Cardinal Hill, moving into her godfather’s house. The only place she knew to go. After two years, he graciously purchased her a cute and quaint house on the lower side of Cardinal Hill.
Since settling in she’s been slowly rebuilding her life, keeping a relatively low profile but still curating a small local following of her music. The desire to be in the spotlight remains and her divination calls to her.
Additional Information/Headcannons:
Céleste didn’t bring a lot with her to Cardinal Hill but she did not forget to bring her collection of postcards. A lot of them were vintage one’s from New Orleans but there were also many from every place her father had visited when traveling for art exhibitions and the pull to hedonism. She keeps them in an old ornate wooden box. When she’s feeling sad she’ll look through them and feel nostalgic.
She also has a collection of vintage jazz records, some so rare that they are virtually priceless. Those are the ones she keeps locked away, only sharing them with those she trusts and cares for. She also keeps her mother’s recordings locked away, the music a tangible tether to the past.
Growing up in such an energy rich city of New Orleans, she garnered a sensitivity to the local spirit’s that haunted the historic Louisiana streets. She’s been able to see and hear spirits since she was a child, although it’s always shaken her, never fully comfortable with it. She’ll see them in old jazz clubs or the dark corners of the city. There’s a mischievous spirit from the 1920’s who often visits her during late nights, playing crooning trumpet melodies in her head. She’s come to accept them as a part of her life, but she doesn’t always welcome their company.
She uses things like clothing as an extension of her practice to protect herself from baneful energies. Carefully choosing pieces to reflect her mood and intentions for the day. For example if she’s feeling stuck or vulnerable — she’ll wear dark shades of purple for protection and encouraging intuition. If she’s feeling drained emotionally, she might wear more loose fitting, sheer or cream colors as a way to cleanse the aura around her.
She also always wears a moonstone pendant her mother got for her, everywhere she goes.
Because she’s always been attuned to the moon. Often times doing rituals under it, slipping out of her house late at night. To her backyard or to meditate on the roof.
Céleste practices in many ways besides these moonlit rituals. She also has a knack for reading tarot. Humans think that her readings are eerily accurate, just by chance. But it is the universe that guides her hands, not some parlor tricks.
Speaking of her hands, they’re also healing in subtle ways. All she has to do is lay her hand on someone’s shoulder, someone feeling anxiety and unease; before they know it a serene feeling will wash over them. An intimate and special form of healing she only gives to those she cares deeply for.
She’s also not the best cook, but she is a great baker. Often times adding medicinal herbs and incantations into every baked good. Which she always has too many of, being a chronic stress baker. Stoker Addams often wakes up with goodies on his front porch when she's particularly frazzled because there's no way she's eating all these damn muffins.
Her Capricorn and Virgo placement's often make her feel the need to be in control of everything in her life but her Aquarius sun gives her a nearly unpredictable range of emotions. So it can be hard to trust herself when she's feeling conflicted, so it causes her to retreat into herself and pull away from people.
Despite this, she actually really loves people. She has a particular soft spot for people who are considered misfits, that don't fit into societal norms. She feels a protective impulse towards them, always able to see herself in others. An extreme empath.
People sometimes consider Cece a bit mysterious because she keeps others at a distance. But she is not intentionally trying to be elusive so this is confusing to her because she's quite kind and goofy. She just really likes to read people and keep a lot of her thoughts to herself, leaving people to wonder what's going on in her head. Unless you get to know her, then she's a YAPPER.
This causes her to sometimes have what she affectionately calls 'resting witch face'.
Céleste, despite being relatively responsible and on top of things she is often fashionably late. It's not that she's trying to disrespect people, she's just running on her own chaotic time frame. She's known to show up to her classes just a few minute's before they start. This is both infuriating and endearing to her student's and friend's alike; who have just learned to get used to her own pace.
Something everyone has also gotten used to is the fact that she's just a bit of a character overall. A certified weirdo. Unapologetically herself. She's the type to blurt out the rest of a song when someone has said accidentally said a phrase from one. Or to dance along in her house or blurting out odd commentary at sometime's inappropriate times. Her sense of humor can be a bit dry at times but when it hits, it hits.
She also has a very good knack for giving pep talks. A side effect of being introspective, she always has an observation, an outside perspective. It seems like she always knows what to say, always grounded and coming from a place of empathy. She has a way of knowing how to make people feel understood and how to encourage them.
